My 1.5 doesn't have AC and living in Malta it makes summer driving unbearable. I've been tempted to try and find a used system online and fit it but I'm not sure about the cost of the system and also how difficult it is to install. Is it worth it?

You will need quite a lot of items. Have a look under the bonnet of an AC BA and compare with yours.
My first thoughts are: pump/compressor with a new belt to drive it, electrical controls, pipework ... the list goes on ... but I understand the need for it in Malta!
:)

Yea there are definitely quite a few components to fit. I don't know the cost of it all but I'm more concerned with the installation. If it's too difficult to do myself, or if it's even possible. Then I'd look into the cost.

It is possible and actually not that complicated. The car is already prepared for the A/C. If you are lucky, you cal still find the dealer option complete kits that were used to retrofit A/C after importing the cars in the 90s. Sometimes they pop up on ebay.
Tbie biggest problem with fitting used parts is the connectors being all seized up and breaking upon removal.

I've removed both AC from both my cars(mine and wife's)
Realy not that big of a faf..
Mecanically speaking thou.
If the car has the electric wiring, the other stuff is just bolt on.
I have a friend who did put AC to a non AC golf2 and he did it in one day work.
He got the parts from a wrecked car fitted them with new filter dryer and new condenser radiator and was good to go.
There were some problems at first, some rubber seals where leaking, but after changing them he had no problems at all maybe 6 or 7 years.
Go for it, i'm with you on this case.I know what it is to sit in the traffic when the temp outside is 40 degrees celsius.

Yep it lights up!
I remember when I got the car it was covered with electric tape to make it look like a blank button then I discovered it said AC and was ecstatic...then I discovered I don't have the components lol

Right, I just saw that you both come from warm countries.
That should make things easier as you won't have to deal with as much corrosion...
