I've been thinking about what todo about the gearbox, apart from already searching arround
for a spare Gbox. I think I might investigate what a set of straight cut gears will cost. The
awesome wine sound I'd like in the car aswell.

Too bad there's basicly only the option of the toyota box, or well... not much...

You've already seen it, I posted that kit in 2011! viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48126&hilit=gear When I emailed them last year they said I could have it delivered in the UK for $3500 AUD should have gone for it then!

Broken gearbox
Now this has been one of the toughest issues we've come across on this build, what to do? Will it be enough? Is it worth it?
However, we have made a decision!!!!

What we plan on doing is building a strong G series box,
A lot of research has gone into this decision and the main factors for this rather than the Toyota box conversion is that the Toyota box will mean the engine will need to move up and forward and one of the main chassis rails would need "massaging" to miss the 5th gear case and a lot of faffing around to get it all to fit.

So what we will be doing:
Fitting an LSD, at the moment the decision is to buy from Mfactory (or Quaife)


We will be bracing the bearing cups 5th gear end with a plate designed and made by Ferdi from USA



The bearing cup at the clutch end can be the next weakest link so a plate will be welded inside again based on the work done by Ferdi (this was done to Kia bell housing but we will do the same to our Mazda bell housing


Then to try and prevent the case from flexing we will be installing a cage around the box similar to what Johan Carlsson from Sweden did:

We will be putting another brace halfway between the two mounting flanges.
Also after some discussions with Ferdi we are having the bearing plate mod and this mod combined into one part.

Finally to ensure we have as little side loading forces on the gearbox from helical cut gears we will be using a full PAR straight cut synchromesh gear set.


Hopefully all this will be completed for Japfest 2 but we'll see how it goes

Please keep all the details and drawings. This seems like a very interesting idea. I've also read
it's the flex in the box that makes the main problem.

Mazda tried to solve it themselves also a bit by making a triangle piece to fit inbetween the gear casing,
and the diff. To keep it from flexing like that.

But with my 2nd gearbox I might follow this path aswell, it would seriously suck though if the shit still breaks
after you've fitted expensive parts.

I will be documenting everything so all work can be replicated
After all this work we will still be kind to the gearbox no launches etc, hopefully it will last us many years of track fun


We need to decide on some new tweaked gear ratios,
looking at going for a slightly longer 1st and 2nd

With the sort of horsepower you have, and front wheel drive, it's not worth trying to go for record breaking launches anyway...so you'll save tyres and your nice new gearbox

That said I still reckon we could do a 1/4 mile in 13.something seconds

With some of the standalone ecus you can set a launch control which will help it off the line a lot.

That's some proper gearbox work there mate. Been looking a bit for a custom 5th gear to reduce the rpm on motorway cruising a bit. Already have a mx6 gearbox but still little under 4k rpm at 120kph. But this is a whole new level lol. Nice work!

Did some interior work today,
we finished fitting out G4 Knocklink (thanks Ernee ) to balance the dash board out we purchased a shift light from Japfest last year
