are the lights more for when you lock the car or does it have a sensor so it knows you are near the car door

On my Equipe, it's when the door handle is pulled, or the key is turned in the lock. It also lights up the ignition barrel from a light just above it in the dash plastics.

Saves so many light scratches around the keyhole, I guess you could say I have no issues finding the hole at night

well you dont want to get it into the wrong hole, could lead to all sorts of problems let alone scratches

so when you approch the car at night and its locked, you pull up the door handle and the light comes on?

my guess is it was fitted to (some) ba's that didnt have remote locking as the option.

if i find a car with it i might try fitting it to mine.

Correct, on both door locks and the ignition.

but you need special door handles with place for a bulb and a switch right?

before you say im sad (i am) i was going the scrap yard anyway i was taking parts off a silver exec and had a look to see if it had a key hole light and it did! seems its only available on drivers side. and can be put on any BA and doesnt mean you have to keep the lock. havnt fitted it yet though.

My 1.5 GXi had this, and the ignition barrel light. I know my V6 has the ignition barrel light, but I can't remember if the keyhole on the door lights up, I never use it The V6 did come with remote locking factory fitted, so perhaps Mazda decided it was pointless fitting it.

Mines a v6 and hasnt got this i dont think any v6 has. I dont use the locks either but oh well.

The black thing up by the map lights is the receiver for the IR based (read: crap) remote locking fob. Mine no longer actually has that receiver as I swapped the light / receiver unit for the modded one from my 1.5.

got so many things i have collected up that need fitting...big breath...xenon white fog lights bulbs, euro rear fog light, power folding mirrors, new wings, full cam belt and pulley kit, new water pump, new spark plugs, new leads, new fuel filter, a new air con pump, new air con drier, new air con rad, bbs 17'' alloys, xedos 9 front calipers, new outer cv boots, new braded brake hoses, a replacement cv joint, suede dash insert, chrome dial rings, puddle lights, cold air feed induction kit, auto roll up window kit, alarm, new spoiler and leather seats to go back in. i think thats it. all lying around waiting for their day.
i think i need to stop buying things and get them fitted.

yeh got a ba spoiler with built in brake light going to use that light as a reverse light. but need to find a way of changing it to white first.
