Picked up some genuine TWR sideskirts last week...

I'm still undecided on whether to keep them or not, so I thought I would offer them up to the car and take a few pics to help me decide. They are only held on by being such a good fit , so they aren't pushed right in at the arches etc...

As it was...

Left one fitted - this is the worst one, as it has suffered some damage on the bottom, nowt too bad, fixable :)

Right one fitted

Hmmm, I do quite like it...

Already sold the skirts mate, keeping the car standard as much as possible.

...apart from the engine and exhaust, have already removed the air pump, and fitted a stainless manifold and exhaust system...it's now running 150bhp at the flywheel :D

You're right, it is a beautiful car :)

:D

here many friends fix old cars, with fiberglass, cut the rusted parts and repair the parts with fiberglass.
And use it to prevent rust in many parts. Is a good idea maybe can help you.
Other trick is use polyurethane foam like this http://cgi.ebay.com/New-FOMO-P30107-24o ... 3ca39e280a

in many places to seal

I wanna see more update of your car

Cheers

Well, the poor old rex hasn't really moved since the snow, so after a good charge of the battery, I started it for the first time on Friday morning, and took it to work :D

When I pulled away, there was an odd noise from the back of the car...I stopped, pulled away again, and it was fine...did it a few more times, and no more noise...hmmm, maybe just something a bit stuck, must be freed off now I thought...

So, I get to work, and drive slowly over the small speedbump in the car park...and there was an odd boinging noise from the left rear :?

Was going to take it over to good old Garath to have a look underneath on Saturday, but as we were leaving Karissa noticed this, lying on the ground a few feet from where the car had been parked previously...

Image

It has sheared completely...although it is the original spring, so has been on the car for 27 years...not too bad

Image

I've ordered a set of Spax 30mm lowering springs...watch this space ;)

Some of you might have seen on my facebook status that both this and the GT were keyed last week :( so today I have set up step 1 in the action plan...this is my current viewing pleasure :D

How did that chunk manage to fall off? Does the strut not pass through it?

Had an absolute nightmare with the springs

Took rex to the MX5 Restorer...or Garath as we know him here

We did the rears in about 20 minutes, seriously, it was really quick and easy. We then got stumped by the fronts...
A bit of research and some help from an MRC member later, we attacked the fronts the following week. Passenger side, a little tricky, but managed it with no problems. The driver's side was a different story, one of the lower bolts was seized solid - even with 2 people on a 4 foot breaker bar couldn't shift it :?

So, I gave it to my mechanic friend, and he fitted the driver's side spring for me (took him a couple of days!) and then took it for an MOT...

Passed...with a couple of advisories, mainly surface rust...a job to do over the year :)

I will take some pics once the suspension has settled a bit, although I don't think it will look much different, as the old springs were very worn and saggy

The rex should get quite a lot of attention over the winter...it has sat for most of the year in the corner of the workshop, and not been used much - I lost a lot of enthusiasm when it got keyed :(

I have decided to turn it around over the winter, shopping for parts has begun for the bits we need...
first thing was a "moon roof" - a glass panel to replace the steel tilt/remove sunroof. Quite a rare item, and one I've wanted for a long time :) It is tinted from the outside, and reflective on the inside, and reflects the solar heat, which is good, as it's pretty much the whole roof

cheers guys :)

I think they are a bit of a marmite thing, some people say they spoil the lines of the car a bit...but I really like it, and it really brightens up the interior of the cabin, which is a good thing, it's pretty small in there. You can see between the first 2 pics the amount of light it lets in, and that's in the workshop!!!

I need to clean up the fixings, and paint them again, and give it a good polish where it's a bit scratched, but otherwise, it's all good. Safely tucked away in it's lined bag at the moment, tied into the boot with the original straps - Mazda thought of everything :)

Been doing a bit more shopping... :)

The FB was fitted with mirrors commonly referred to as "cricket bats"...for the obvious reason that they are about the same size and shape

There were some aero mirrors available in Oz, but these come up very rarely indeed, and fetch very good money...so I found a decent budget set of mirrors, and had a quick trial fit today :)

I think they suit the car a lot better, not too modern looking, I am very keen to maintain the "retro" look ;)

more updates soon...a lot is going to happen to the car over winter 8)
