This can be a simple yet effective way to improve the performance of your car.

Tools needed:

Socket set
Pliers
Dremel drill
Sandpaper fine to super fine grade
Cloths
Metal polish

Open the bonnet and remove your strut bar if you have one fitted, next remove your air intake pipe that directly attaches to the throttle body.

Next remove the two sensors attached to the throttle body

Then remove the water intake and outlet with a set of pliers on the clips, then gently coax the actual pipes off.

Remove the bolt which attaches the throttle cable and the circular plate to the throttle body itself.(the bolt is in the centre of the circular plate)

Next remove the 4 bolts holding the throttle body in place

The throttle body then removes easily. When you look at it it will most likely be clogged and dirty like this.

Give it all a good clean.

Now to the porting. Use the dremel drill with a sanding attachment and start sanding the throttle body ever so slightly but do not go past the throttle plate pictured below as this can stop it closing.

Keep doing this until you have removed all of the rough feeling metal on the inside. Next tackle it with sandpaper, the finer the better until it is as smooth as a babys bottom.

Next polish the TB up with metal polish to make it as smooth as possible.

Here is a picture of a standard one removed and a ported and polished one.

In extreme cricumstances the throttle plate can be removed and given a blade like edge pictured below. And also the centre bar that holds the throttle plate can be flattened slightly to further increse air flow.

Finally fit the throttle body and follow the steps back, re-attach the bolts, pipes, air intake and stick your strut bar back on.

FINAL NOTES

The easiest way to do all of this is to pop to the scrapyard and get a matching throttle body to your own so you can port and polish it in your own time. Also if you mess it up in some way you still have your car working fine with the original throttle body.

The car this was done on was a post ford 1.5 Z5 engine, there are a difference in pre and post ford throttle bodies.

Has anyone else got any experiences or things to add to this???

Also my standard throttle body that was removed will be getting ported and polished to sell on when i have time if anyone is interested.

Steve, thanks very much a very good guide (even I can follow) I can now do this myself! I've seen TB on Ebay for a tenner for our car so worth getting a second one.

Next step the air intake pipes? :)

It will make you smile how much you can take off those at the
engine side! :D

@ Marshy, mate, just Autosol from Halfrauds or Ebay did the trick. Perhaps a more expensive would have produced better results. Glad to help.

@ Cosmos, remember that there is a difference in pre and post ford throttle bodies. Make sure its the right one.

@ Sparkle_, I am tempted to remove the pipes and even just give them a clean, the layer of crap that was on the throttle body was like sandpaper and about 1 - 2 mm thick. Even just a clean would make a mahoosive difference i think.

Would probably resist the temptation to hourglass or half the spindle as some people do. If you do hourglass it be very very careful about how much material you remove, as they can snap, which could be costly in the long run. Knife edging the butterfly plate is a good idea - just make sure you do the correct side, you should also try and taper it towards the centre as well if you can. Remember and re-lube all moving parts and threadlock the butterfly screws back in.
Below is a link to the last Escort RS Turbo one that I done on e-bay.

Crap money for the work involved.

Cheers

Eog,I think Xtremethings are Canadian or USA. Seen some of their stuff a year or so ago - very good indeed. I'm sure they give tips on their website about what to do and how to go about it without expensive machinery. Best bet is playing about with stuff from scrappies in case something f****s up.
