Dastek Unichip

Well - I just bit the bullit ! My Edith is booked in for next Wednesday to have the Dastek Unichip installed ! Now I'll really derive some benefit from my K&N Panel Filter, the TNT exhaust headers and the freeflow exhaust !!!

I will be getting before and after dyno readings which I will share with you ASAP .......

I had a friend went to daztec just over the forth road bridge, he had the unichip put into his 172 and great gains for a good price and has helped improve alot of engine problems he had in the past, one of the best engine mods to date.

would be interested to know what sort of increase you get out of it.

OK - small hicough ... I was bragging to the guitarist in my friend's band who is a mechanic in real life. When I told him where I was going, he cringed, and told me for God's sake not to let them anywhere near my car, 'cause they're really dodgy.

It turns out that Carte Blanche (a consumer watchdog type TV show here) did a feature on them a couple of weks ago and they didn't do to well ...

Anyway, I've cancelled the appointment, and made another at a more reputable place. Worst part is that the earliest appointment is for March 24th - that's in 2½ weeks time ! Oh well - as it is written - if you want a job done properly, get someone who is busy to do it ...

Idea ! Gives me time to get some aircon ducting and see if I can organise a cold air feed first !!!

Well - I've got the K&N panel filter in all ready, and I drilled holes in the bottom of the air box, before hearing about the advantages of cool air.

So the plan is to plug the drill holes, then remove the rsonance thingy and replace it with some sort of ducting that will lead to the front of the bumper ...

Yup thats the deal, U will need to remove your front bumper, the resonator is held in with 2 bolt, very easy to remove.

Hopefully there will be a guide with pics in a few days on the main web site. Need to Nag Mr T for pics we took on sat.

dont need to mess about doin that, just link it to the engine tray. if u look directly below where the air box was there is a diffuser bit on the engine tray, which is what i have mine linked to.

or of course if u felt like it u could have a hole put in ya front bumper like shaggy has done

or simply run it round into the front grill

'Scuse my ignorance, but what's a 172 ? I will be getting before and after Dyno readings which will be scanned and published here as soon as they are available.

If you want to remove the resonator, you WILL have to remove the front bumper Ben, im not talking about the CAF, im talking about removing the white resonator box fella.

Sorry mate, my bad. A 172 is the Clio sport, resonably quick but at the end of the day its french, nuff said. Was it dastec that you heard were dodgy as we havent had any probelms with them over the last 2 years and that was were i was contemplating taking my car to :cry:

No No No !!! It's not the Dastek that's dodgy; it's the place I was going to go to to get it installed that's alledgedly dodgy !

There is also the hypothesis that all car repair shops are dodgy - you just have to look around to find the least dodgy one ... :wink:

I'm still getting a Unichip installed, I'm just going to take my baby to a different performance place to get the installation/mapping done. And because they're better, they're busier, so I'll have to wait longer.

Gerry at Dastek is the guy who actually imports Unichips into the UK from South Africa. If you go to any other Unichip dealer in the UK, they will have been trained by Gerry. Dastek also have a fairly reliable Rolling Road that doesn't overinflate the power figures - maybe why that's why they didn't come out too well i a comparative test, because their RR tells the truth! Just a thought - and by the way, I have no connection with Gerry or Dastek - merely stating a few facts

By the way, I live in South Africa, where the Dastek is made, which is probably why I'm getting it much cheaper than you poor sods ! Installation, mapping and B4/after Dyno results are going to cost me about R2280.00 including 14% VAT, i.e. about GBP200.00 !

Smotter could you ask how much the chip itself is for the 1.5? Then I'll see how much it would be to install and map. You could start an export business!

The Chip only comes in a couple of versions - the wonderful thing is that it is completely programable and works in addition to the existing ECU, so if you sell your Mazda (Heaven forbid !!!) you can unplug it; the car will revert to the original factory settings and you can probably fit it to your next car.

When I get mine fitted, I'll see about the possibility of buying them "Take-Away" - maybe I could bring a couple out with me at the end of May ??

Wow !!! Only 2 sleeps left to I upgrade my baby's ECU !!!

We had a public holiday yesterday, which I put to good use servicing my Edith. Changed oil, oil filter and plugs (fitted NGK BCPR6ES's) and washed and re-oiled my K&N panel air filter. While I was at it, I dropped the front bumper (easier than I expected - althought those 10mm bolts inside the wings were a b*****d to get at !) and removed the resonator. I also took out the airbox and closed the holes I drilled (before learning about cold-air-feeds) with black silicon. So now I still have the tube running down from the airbox to the interior of the wing and she's running well.

Can't wait 'till Thursday, though ......... :wink:

OK - She's in at "VanderLinde Development" - should be ready at about 3:00 pm ...

You may (or may not) have heard of the South African Van Der Linde brothers - they have at one point or another won most racing classes currently active in SA and have their own performance tuning shop; Dyno tuning, Head Gas Flowing, free flow exhausts etc. and a VERY good reputation.
