I won't spoil the outcome for you, but Chris Harris said 'this drives better than the Mercedes'.

Yep - put a smile on my face watching that. It's nice that the still-picture on iPlayer for that episode has the red BA front and centre - it definitely stands up on looks alone. There were lots of positive comments, including the famous Mazda reliability. But does consolidate my view, I'd never go for an auto box!

Yes, Chris Harris didn't explain further about the auto problem, but perhaps he should have used the manual over-ride!
It's possible the kick-down switch wasn't working, and all he had to to was press the micro-switch on the gear lever .. (I have a BJ with the same auto box, but my BA is a manual).
