So, I've probably just made the biggest impulse ever and just decided to do it... get an RX8!

I'm hopefully picking it up next week, as it's got a few little exterior bits I want them to replace or sort before I take it. They're doing a small mark on the front bumper and a small mark on the door, and replacing the front plate and side 'Nemesis' badges, and giving it a valet and a service, and then it's all mine!

It's a 2007 Copper Red Nemesis Edition:
- Cream leather interior.
- 'Nemesis' badging around the car.
- "Rotary" emblem on the exterior door pillars.
- 9-speaker BOSE speaker system.
- ABS and EBD.
- DSTC - Dynamic Stability and Traction Control
- Rear lip spoiler.
- Bucket seats.
- Chrome and Leather vents and dash.
- Heated front seats.
- Remote electric boot release.
- LSD.
- Chrome instrument bezels.
- Halogen headlights.

I know! Never drifted before... might need to get some practice in once I've gotten used to the car! Will find out how expensive the tyres are!

well there are loads of drifting days (kind of like track day but it is drifting for novices.) . They let people go one at a time and depending on what track you go to, most have quite a lot of run off so even if you spin out and go off track there is no issue of hitting anything.

Most people who plan on doing a few drift days just organise spare Alloys and then make arrangements at their local tyre place to get used tyres that come off customers cars for free

Not sure quite what my plans are yet... got some ideas and thoughts, but nothing concrete yet! I don't think I'm going to do the whole body-kit thing, I think I'm just going to do subtle things for now, and then maybe look at something a bit crazier down the line!

Nice one Matty. From what I've heard about them, you need to thrash it regularly! Keep an eye on the oil level too ... they have a spare bottle in the boot for a reason!!

Yep, they pump some oil from the sump into the housings to lubricate the tips, so they use oil. They also have a small sump, so you need to carry a bit with you.

See what oil has been put in it - if it's had some really good semi-synthetic, or fully synthetic...walk away, please!!!! Mineral oil is the only stuff to use, as it burns cleanly. People will argue about it, but not those that are really in the know

It's cool, already got a lot of good advice on the RX8 forum! I've been reading up and getting advice on premixing too, as in adding a small amount of oil to the fuel mixture. Not convinced on that yet though...

I premix on the RX7 - but that's a 28 year old car, with an OMP that I am unsure of...you won't need to with the 8

A Drift gloss black shifter knob to match the head-unit, oil-cooler protector grills, some LEDs and a load of stainless steel nights to brighten and clean up the engine bay a bit more!

That's one of the biggest flaws with the stock rotary engines. The apex seals need lubrication. The best stuff for the job is 2 stroke millers kb2t oil as it burns much better and is ashless and leaves a lovely race fuel type smell behind. It also lubricates a dam site better compared to the omp dribbling a bit of oil onto the apex seal every now and then. All the rx7 drag boys in the uk use this stuff. Steer clear of the castrol castor as it tends to gum injectors up. Normal 4 cycle engine oil isn't designed to be burned so it leaves carbon deposits no matter how much you rev the engine. There is 2 ways round this. You can either have a separate oil tank in the engine bay purely for 2 stroke oil fed to the omp, or remove the omp completely and run premix. All the ones in the know do this. If you run premix and have no omp you have the advantage of using full synthetic oil in the sump because the omp isn't picking it up and injecting it to be burned. Best synth oil for rotary is mobil 5w30.

Mazda had to make compromises. They would have loved to have a separate tank as i suggested or even better still with the driver pouring a little 2 stroke oil with the fuel but this wouldn't have been a popular choice for the customers, many of whom would either forget to fill it, or put the wrong oil in. They resentfully compromised and fitted the omp fed from the sump hence the reason they suggest mineral only because synth is even worse than mineral when it comes to burning it off.

If you do this and run WI, your engine will stay super clean inside and will last longer. Only problem with running premix on the rx8 is the cat. I personally would remove it between mot's and run premix all year round. kb2t mixed with the fuel. When mot comes round, fit the cat and bobs your uncle. In your case it would be less hassle to just use mineral in the sump, premix in the tank and the cat removed. It all depends on how passionate you are about looking after your engine i suppose. Being a twintub rotary owner myself, i'm just like any other rotary enthusiast and i go all i can to make sure the engine is getting it's best possible life.

Most of the rx7's up to 1995 if I remember correctly don't need cat emissions tests, so we can run premix all year round in the tank, remove the omp and use whatever oil we want be it mineral or synth. On a related note, because 2 stroke is ashless and is designed to be mixed with fuel, i would hazard a guess that the emissions would be even lower than a stock rx8 with the omp. If someone had an exhaust gas analyser it would be simple to test out.

RX8 running nice clean premix with omp removed versus Stock RX8 running omp and injecting the engines filthy mineral oil into the combustion chamber. My money would be on the premixed version having the lower emissions simply because it's burning clean ashless oil.

One thing i need to add is that, if you are using the omp and it's pumping from the engine oil, the ratio in which you would use for premixing would be less than if you were using 100% premix with no omp. Basically, you put less premix in the fuel if your using the omp, but use more premix if you don't have the omp. HTH
