Is it only when you start it up from cold?

no mate its pretty much constant its not that bad during driving but its not far off

get yourself a cheap borescope off ebay which will connect to your laptop and then pull a plug out and look inside the bore. If there is no visible damage on the bore then it will be valve stem seals which is a lot better than if there is damage in the bore

hence the haynes manual piccys lol

What pressure did you set it at mate? Mine was tuned on a rolling road, albeit a few years ago now Rich H an I spent many years tuning them by feel, mine felt alot better once it had been fettled on a 'road though

Might be best leaving that till the smoking issue has been sorted though

Don't feel to bad though mate because since I've switched to that Halfords 15w30, Meanie has been smoking alot more on startup, to the point yesterday that it took 3 or 4 minutes before the cloud of blue smoke dwindled and I'm pretty sure it was still smoking for the first half mile I drove too Bloody valve stem seals, grrrrrr!

My smoking has got much better andy for some reason, shes smoking on start-up but thats to be expected of an engine thats done 150k. Not that worried about it for the time being though, along as shes kicking its all good!

I seem to be loosing alot of oil through leaks at the minute, need to replace my cam cover gasket and distributor o-ring (AGAIN!! :@)

What oil are you using - I see Andy is using 15W30...which will probably burn away more quickly than a **W40 oil

Hmmm, you're giving it the best chance then I'd say...

You could try one of the treatments that FPS sells, they can help if the seals are a little tired, might be worth a go?

i have got some treatment to try soon, hopefully that will help but im on the look out for a new Z5 anyway cheers marc

Its a lot better than that 0w Edge stuff that we were all raving about a couple of years back 15w30 is actually the recommended weight across the Mazda range now I'm told With the possible exception of deisels and rotaries of course I have been using Mobil 15w30 ESP, certainly helps ALOT with smoking issues, I ve since switched to the 15w30 fully synth that Hellfrauds brand and it smokes way more

Glad the smokings got a little better chap, maybe we should film a smooking start up and see who's is worse

5W30 is recommended mate, not 15

your car will probably burn less with a 40 than a 30, as it will break down less at high temps. Different oils break down differently too...so you could try a different brand ?

I use 5w30 fully synth in mine and considering the 167k on the clock theres very minimal smoke. I dont know if it makes much difference between the engines?

Ive also got a bottle of the STP fuel injector cleaner if its any good to you Lerch? Im not sure if it'll help with the smoking as its for the fuel system?

i did put 5w30 in when i first got maddy but she seemed to use it like petrol lol since ive put this new 15w40 stuff in its smoked alot less and is using much less so it might be okai, im still going to put some oil treatment in when change the oil and filter in a few weeks.
