any one got a guide for changing a track rod and it's end?

or is it just a simple case of get under the car and have a go at taking it off?

I'll be changing my track rod end's tomorrow, that just a case of removing the bottom nut and unscrewing the thread. As for the rod itself, don't quote me but i'm sure that'll be simple enough

Ummmmm welllll...... I went outside, looked at the car, then came in and made a cuppa

no i went round and sorted my fog light out and polished up th edrivers side then had to stop as the rain started. lol

need to wait for another dry day to do the passengers side.

Changed the track rod ends today. One side took me 10mins, the other about 5 mins including taking the wheels off

One thing i did get stumped on is how come the new track rod ends have grease nipples on the top and the old ones didn't? Do i need to fill these with grease?

Basically i just -

Slackened off the lock nuts a quarter turn
Removed the split pin from the bottom of the track rod end
Removed the 17mm nut from the bottom of the track rod end
Beat the track rod end upwards with a hammer
Wind the end off of the rod and replace it with the new one
Do the same again backwards remembering to tighten the lock nut back up

did you get your tracking done as well??

THis is one of the jobs on my list before the MOT

can't belive it was that easy mate. knowing my luck the locking nut etc will be seize on or something, making it difficult when i come to do it.

Thats the brass grease nipple im confused about mate. It was that easy but it needed severe beating upwards to be able to get the end out lol.

No matt i haven't got my tracking done yet, im taking it in for 3D alignment at the end of the week so that will get done at the same time If i'm honest i can't see you needed your tracking done that urgently as you barely adjust the lock nut.

i'll be odering some tomorrow then. mot next month just hope nothing else needs done lol

Sorry Scott, I was a tad eager with my post thinking you were doing the ball joints. As with OEM springs folk have to jack the car AND the suspension leg to get them on, where as with coilies you only have to do the car

Anybody have any idea whether this grease nipple has a purpose? Is it just to top up the grease or should i have used it when i first installed them? I'm stumped!

screw the nipple on and fill it up with a grease gun.

Thanks mate, the nipples been screwed in, i'll grab a grease gun from work next week and stick some in then.

Scott, what made you change them in the first place? Was there a knocking noise or something?
Also, where did you get the parts from and how much were they?

I noticed the rubber was perished on them when changing suspension, don't think they made a knocking noise.

I got the from www.rocspares.co.uk (fordprobestore) and they were about a tenner each i can't remember exactly
