don't pre fords have koito headlights and post fords have bosch - bosch headlights being slightly clearer? (might have already been said)

Mine was a mixture - 97 P Reg... flame badge, no push button, koito headlights, horrid rubber gaitor
Am i right in thinking that the pre-fords dont have the adjustable headlights?

My replacement headlight fitted as part of repairs after the accident doesnt adjust with the one that wasnt damaged because it comes from a pre-ford :blackeye:
Koito came as adjustable and non adjustable, TBH i've only seen adjustable ones......
95/96 ??? mines 1st registered on 28th feb 1997... and it is a mixed feature car like that....

from pre ford models i have:
-green interior
-plain green seats
-badgeless steering wheel
-pre ford mirrors
-armrest covered deep side pockets
- old mazda badges
- koito headlamps (h3/h1 mix)

and from post ford i have:
- crappy rubber ribbed gaitor ( long gone now though)
-post ford heating panel
- black door strips
- buttonless rear panel and key hole
- driver side boot release lever
-? not sure about this one, but my power steering cooling pipe does not go in front of the radiator like it did in my old GLX

i don't have no high level brake light
boot release and high level brake light were both available on the imports....(probably an option for the Pre ford mazda)

i think that on the pre fords it went in front of the rad no matter what engine size, but i think the 1.5 post ford doesnt (think that is right)

I have a late-97 post-Ford ZXi.

No push button boot
Have black strips down the side
Have door storage without a flap

Has anyone noticed sliders for heat and fan speed on the air con control bit of the dash are slightly different in some cars? Compare the two pictures above.

another difference

the mechansim that operates the seat rails is different
on the post fords it is just a piece of wire (gardening styley) looped between the 2 rails

on the pre fords it is a cable system within a sheath (much like boot release etc)

nothing major - but a difference all the same :thumbright:

Not sure what mine is?! I know its a BA model and its a 1.5GXi. Its R reg and 1997. I actually wanted to ask what was the difference between the Lantis and Astina? is this the pre/post ford thing? Also Have ford now buggered off and left mazda to what they do best by themselves?!

lantis and astina are just different names for the same car in different regions of the world :thumbright:

Don't know if it's specific, but the idle air control valve bypass is made with a rubber pipe straight from the intake hose on pre-ford ('96 BA) and done in the throttle body itself on post-ford ('98 BA).
The latter is much better, the pipe usually cracks and causes a vacuum leak (it just did).

also makes it slightly easier to make up your own CAF, one less hole to make

Another difference between my two Mazdas: the injector valve cable harness has more connectors in pre-ford and also the temparature sender is mounted under the distributor. Looks like as post-ford models have a central plug for everything around there.

Pre fords have a power steering cooler pipe, post fords don't.
Pre fords have a mirror on the drivers sun visor and have a texture the same as the roof lining, post fords have vinyl sun visors and no mirror on the drivers side.
Pre fords have a catalyst in the manifold, and another catalyst in the midpipe. Post fords have a single cat in the midpipe.
Pre fords have 2 water temperature sensors, post fords have a single 3 wire sensor.

All down to cutting costs.

My post ford 1.8 has a PS cooling pipe :) I think my post 1.5 did aswell but can't remember

James: Ford increased their share size of Mazda in 1996, BA's were made from 94 to 98, you figure

94 to early 96 would be preford

97 to 98 are post

96 = a mix and match of everything!

Yeah i think matt is right. Just a difference between the pre/post 1.5's.

Ford have never outright owned mazda by the way. They just had varying levels of stakes in the company. It started with a 7% stake in 1979 rising up to a peak of 33% by 2002 and fairly recently news was announced that ford was to sell a 20% share. Apparently mazda purchased 6.8% of shares back for $184 million, with other companies buying the rest that ford were selling, so that currently leaves ford with a stake of 13.8%. That still makes ford the top shareholder in mazda.

ive had a 1998 emerald green 1.5 and now i have a 1995 V6.
first one was completely postford (dash and digital km meter) and the second is completely preford, with the big button on the rear, side lights in the door panels, old style dashboard and everything. ive driven a 1.5 1997 with old dashboard and the material used for steering wheel and shift knob is different.. although its both some kind of rubber its has a completely different texture.

the reason NZ/AUS got rebaged 323s, 626s and and the mx6 was ford austrlia didnt have any small cars. the big seller for ford was the falcon.
when the rebaged (as a ford laser) and built in australia (and complete knock down kits for nz) 323 hit our and aussie shores it was a hit in 1981. it was the car for small familys and executives and working mums etc.
the 626 got rebadged as the ford telstar. witch was our midsize replement for the then aging ford seirra.
the mx6 badged ford probe wasnt a big seller their are a few on the roads but you have to look to find them.
then the ka came along and replaced the laser.
and then came the fiesta to replace the ka.
the ford mondeo came out about the same time as the telstar, but when the time came to replace it, the used the worst ford ever, a joint venture between ford australia and new zealand. it killed nz production of the cars in nz (cars are now sent built up from australia) that car was FORD TAURUS!

im in need of a pre ford v6 to play with now after reading all this! :D

i got a question. i have a 98 zxi that im currently breaking up and im wandering whether or not to take the gear box off, but im not sure its worth it as going to be a pain in the a**e to do. however i have found out the engine and box are from a 95 xedos 6 so what gear box and drive shafts have i got?? if its a proper pre ford gear box then it might be more worth my while than i first thought ( i have a another zxi im keeping) does anyone know how i can tell what gear box and drive shafts i have? any markings or codes on it?

and will pre ford door cards fit on a post ford? with puddles lights working.

Fascinating thread. After all these years in an F, I hadn't realised there was a pre/post Ford thing going on (but then, I've only ever driven the one). Good to know, should I need certain parts.

I have to concur about '96/'97 models being hybrids. My GXi regd early March '97 (so I assume probably built late '96), and it's all over the place:

Pre Ford badge
Unbadged steering wheel
Koito lights
Old style heater panel
Instrument panel dimmer wheel & headlight adjustment wheel
Flowery seats (but dark blue, so pattern not really noticeable)
Vinyl seat backs
No map pocket in passenger seat
No puddle lights
Light in door lock
Rubber gear stick gaitor (looks awful, recesses continually collect dust & crap)
Deep door pockets with no lids
Boot release by driver's seat; no push release button in back panel
Proper lever for seat adjustment (i.e. not just a cable)
Black strips on doors
No coolant pipes
High level brake light
Wing mirrors black plastic, backs not colour matched to body (or is it shape that determines pre/post?) - anyway, they have an amazing range of vision so I presume pre-Ford.

Although reading that list back, it's sounding more post-Ford, tbh. Amazingly, after driving the car for 15 years, I only spotted the instrument panel dimmer a few months ago; ditto rear wiper washer bottle in the boot

I'm looking at the old girl with fresh eyes after reading all this ;)

Ah, mine are post-Ford, then. But the vision is really good, it's something about the car I really liked - is it possible they used new mirror backs on old mirrors, or is the whole shape/structure different?

It could just be that I'm more tolerant of poor mirrors than anyone else ;)

Seems I have a pre-Ford engine thermostat, as it runs cooler than later cars.

I also learned yesterday (thanks Mazz) that I have a pre-Ford spoiler that you can mount a brake light in. I'd wondered what the cover plate underneath was for. I was replacing the spoiler, as it badly needs a respray, but now I know it's pre-Ford I think I'll swap it out as planned, but then restore it & keep it anyway as an original item for this particular car.
