I have a dilema..

I have a 1.8 BA 323F and have just found a 2ltr 24v exactly the same shape and colour and millage too. The only way you can tell them apart is by the number plate. Now I havent bought the 2ltr yet but I'm very tempted. The idea is to use one to convert into a bit of a meaty powerhouse, and keep the other as a day to day car, but which one should I think about converting?

I'm looking at 1.8bpt = 180hp
or 2.5 KLZE = 200hp

Firstly I'd like to know.. (which is where you guys come in!)

which of these would have better fuel consumption? (motorway and urban)
which is easier to do a conversion?
which of these is the cheapest conversion?
Which of these could you get parts from should anything go wrong?
which has better torque?

Luckily my 1.8 NA now has a G-series gearbox so thats one thing I dont have to worry about if I went the bpt route

I'm presuming the 2.5 klze would be better as it has higher hp and its 5 stud wheels etc so the chassy could take the power better?

Then again, not a lot of searching on google throws up half cuts of the bpt which would have everything I need.

hmmmmm..

decisions..

Any info (or persuasion) would be greatly appreciated!

Sam

Based on my knowledge buddy, the answer to all your questions would be the klze. Pretty sure the bpt would be alot more of a go kart and alot more fun though.

Also i think it would be much more 'sensible' () to be running an N/A 1.8 and a V6 than a 1.8 Turbo and a V6? Especially seeing as the difference in fuel consumption between the 2.0 and the 2.5 would be very little.

Hope that helps

hard question, they are both really nice in my opinion,

bpt is the easier one to extract power from, quite easy to get 225hp+ with not alot of cash, i think it may also be lighter than the v6 engine but not sure by how much

klze will always be around 200hp unless you throw alot of cash at it (NA tuning / boost)
klze once done properly may be a bit more reliable than the bpt

id go for the ze, for an all rounder,

its a bit more unusual than a 4 cylinder,
sounds nicer than any 4 cylinder ever could,
very smooth for daily driving,
enough power for a good bit of fun at the end of the day

with the right mods the bpt will most likely be the faster out of the two....... but you gotta appreciate the quirkyness of a big v6 in a small family car, every c*** and his dog's got a turb0 car these days, do it differently i say :thumbright:

Ive not driven the KL but I have a BPT in my BA and i love it.

The fact you have a G series in your car already ( i presume shes a M reg) makes life ALOT easier...

It depends on what you want... with the KL ur pritty much stuck at 200bhp unless you start doing internal work or bolt a turbo to her.. with the bpt you can fit a bigger zorst, turn the boost up and hit 200bhp easy :) Ive seen 500bhp from a BPD (GTR) block. It all depends on how much power you want, my car has roughly 220bhp and that hits 60mph in a few seconds ( 5-6)

I dont knwo how much torque the KL has but the turbo is easily 270Nm..

having either will be great fun tho!

it is a tricky one, i love the sound of the v6, but then i favour the tubby option too. Perhaps a klze twin turbo is the way forward... :evil4:

Go for a KLZE

:evil4: I'm always going to say that.

The thing I prefer over NA or supercharged is the way the power is delivered. I'm into handling and I don't want boost kicking in mid-way round the corner.

Plus the noise from a v6 is gorgeous.

nono i mean cars in general, to many turb0 this and turb0 that ahahaha

makes sense though as its a good cost effiecient way to make more power

the ZE just has a little more exotica you BPT boys can never have! :evil4:

Well I've bought the car.. picking it up this sunday!

I've not driven a 2ltr V6 before so that in itself will be an experience! So where would you get a klze from these days? and is it a basic engine swap?

Presenting my new v6!

I've not had much chance of driving it as its on a sorn now. I got a quote from my car insurance and it'd e £200 more to upgrade from 1.8 to a 2ltr! thats £1 for every cc!

I drove it back from Kent to Manchester, I put £40 of petrol in it and it drank it up... 235 miles.. I cant be bothered to work out the mpg on that lol but it seems not to be very economical on petrol... hopefully redex, oil change and some new plugs will make a slight improvement

I will have to read all the v6 posts now too.. its like starting all over again!

I think Ill go with a klze engine swap.. after ive saved up enough cashola. I think Id like to drive it first though, its rated to be 147bhp? so I might not convert afterall.. we shall see!

Lol.. I was rounding my friend! The 2ltr is something like 1995cc which is 155cc difference in total :)

I was doing a steady 70mph allll motorway driving.. maybe going over a little to go passed the middle lane hoggers..
Which colour code is that grey colour???
Its 6Z .. called 'Thunder Grey' I dont think a lot of members here have this colour.. it's my favourite tbh but a bugger to find paint that matches

Thanks for the heads-up :) I will have a mosey over there.. but whats the url? I've looked on ebay, there seems to be a few klze over in America..

really tempted with a KLZE myself :D

does anybody know roughly how much money it would take to go from 2ltr v6 to KLZE ( start to finish )? and what other parts would you need?

Hate to admit it but i wouldnt be able to do any of the work myself so guessing this is goin to make it alot more expensive! lol.

You'll probably want,
Cambelt kit,
Tensioner and pulleys,
Water pump,
New clutch (i got a stage 2 clutch with lightened flywheel for £250 on ebay)
Engine Oil,
Coolant,
Oil Filters,
Gear oil,
New intake and exhaust manifold gaskets,
EBC or Rossini or similar grooved and drilled front discs and new brake pads.
Your going to need to relocate your battery and expansion tank if your using the klze intake manifold.

My conversion cost about £1200 for those parts and the mx-6 with my klze engine in (£450)

Thanks for the info!

def still tempted but wonder if its possible for a budget of around £1000 ( inc engine )

is it possible to buy a complete car ( maybe MX6 ) and use some of the parts ( like clutch and water pump ) from that?

One last question! are all of the MX6 2.5 KLZE? if they are different, is there an easy way to tell without looking at the engine itself?
Thanks for the info!

def still tempted but wonder if its possible for a budget of around £1000 ( inc engine )

is it possible to buy a complete car ( maybe MX6 ) and use some of the parts ( like clutch and water pump ) from that?

One last question! are all of the MX6 2.5 KLZE? if they are different, is there an easy way to tell without looking at the engine itself?
only the jap spec's were KLZE's, the euro and us are KLDE's.
if you are doing a transplant i would replace all the ancilaries with new, if you bought a donor car, you wont really know the history.

the KLZE is a good engine and at an estimated 200bhp pretty powerfull for a ba. the KLDE is running approxamatly 164 bhp, which is still pretty good in a BA.

the ZE has better porting and a higher compression ration, the latter not really good for forced induction and nos.

the DE does not have the wicked porting of the ZE, but runs lower compression, which is good for an LPT and nos, or a S/C and nos

i know what im going to be doing, i just need the doner car
