i was wondering if any off you fellas knew if the stock 1.8 normally aspirated block, crank and cons was capable of taking power generated by turbo charging?? i was under the impression that the bottom end could take in the region of 300bhp without modification, is this true??

yeh for the sake of messing about and possible blown motor u may as well go for gtx / gtr. it'd work out cheaper in the long run i think.

recommended option is to BUY a GTX/GTR engine

but a 100% stock BA or BG n/a engine will handle turbo charging fine
it'll make some good power from low boost setups, this being a better head and having high CR pistons, but you'll still need the bolt on's

ie, turbo ECU,,loom, larger injectors, correct sized turbo setup..etc etc

it is more of a challenge really, a toy, there is a 1.8 in a scrapyard near by which they have ripped apart over time, and the engine may be quite cheap. at the moment it is just a possibility i am thinking of.

but you ll need to change all the piping, as the engine sits differently in our cars than it does in the mx5/miata.

nice thing is the low compression ratio of the standard 1.8, could easily take a turbo

plus we do have a mazda forged crankshaft. But turbo on a complete stock bp is out of the question. conrods will snap easily and the valvesprings are not made for boost.
Best bet is h beam conrods, turbo/double valvesprings and different cams. If this is done you will be safe until you ll hit the 300hp mark.
More oil is needed and stronger bolts to keep everything together.

you got it all wrong ph3n1x

BPT conrods are the same as BP conrods, 1st,2nd and 3rd gen
Cranks are the same between them, oil squirter's the same
valves and valves springs are the same between both BPT and BP engines (1st gen)

alot of people can get over 260whp on stock BP internals and one person is doing high 12's 1/4 passes on stock unopened BP engine with a huge turbo

its all in the tune

Cranks are not the same, bpt has a different one, order numbers are different (mazda head mechanic looked that up for me). But i do believe that it is big nose vs small nose crank, but all are forged.

I did read somewhere that the bpt ones are somewhat thicker than the stock BP ones, but i haven't seen one in my life.
As i searched for oem specs on the valvesprings there are differences between 1st, 2nd and the third gen (BP). Third gen has weaker springs, the first 2 have the same ones.
BPD has different valves due to the more heat couse of the bigger turbo. the normal BP do have the same valves, that is true. The BPT i realy dont know

Still need to learn alot, thanks DaVeOr. You are actuatly one of the few that takes time to show me my mistakes and clarifies these up. Unfortunatly i am a really stubborn guy, and when i know something from a mazda mechanic it takes a lot to make me change my mind. Hope you can understand this.

Glad i can help
i didnt go to full detail as the boss was hanging over my shoulder
but the differeance between the BP and BPT from a BG are not enough to warrant a new post..... BA 1st gen and BA 2nd gen vs BG maybe.
mazda seam to just make minor changes for no valid reason
