Hello all,

I'm new from this forum but before posting any question i've read almost every topic in the servicing, technical and insurance section. And believe me when i say that i have searched (here and other forums and webpages also). So like my subject has mentioned i am looking for the OBD-II connector. Let me first give a short detail about me and my car.
I live in Suriname (South America), that is located north from Brazil. I bought my car brand new at a Mazda Dealer over here but was not satisfied with the way they handled me or my problem (with the car). So i though to seek some help from experts (or not) from the internet.
The car is a Mazda 323/323F Lantis S-Wagon. Build 1999. The engine is 1500 CC (ZL-2 is written on the engine). It is a Japanese Built with right-side steering wheel. It's a Gasoline, 5-Speed Manual Transmission.
The problem is this: The car when pressing the clutch in, first idles at a higher RPM before dropping back down. It has never done this before. I haven't serviced the car resently and i've already cleaned the MAF Sensor. I must say that I've changed the MAF sensor a yeat ago. Had the car scanned by a mechanic. (He scanned it with the X-Launch). I had to pay 75 USD for scanning the car. He used the Data Link Connector located in the engine bay.
Now i want to scan the car again so in the meantime i have bought a reader (ELM327) and wanted to connect this to the OBD-II connector which should be located somewhere behind the dash between my right and left foot. Well i've searched for this 16-pin connector and could not find it anywhere mentioned above. It is a 1999 build car so it should have a OBD-II connector or am i mistaken??? The car does not have a Check Engine Light either.

Could someone please help me locate the OBD-II connector (if available in my car). Any help would be appreciated. If willing with pictures please.
I thank you guys in advance for all your time and efforts.

Its directly above the driver footwell fuse box. Looks a bit like a scart socket.

BUT.......
I don't believe the 99 1.5 has OBDII.....

won't work?

Thought it was only possible to read out values through the diagnostics box under the hood.

i'd suggest going to imazda.com and ask about your problem because you won't find an obd-II port :(

The mechanic plugged his reader (the X-Launch) into the DLC (Data Link Connector) situated in the engine bay.

Well i've searched both the driver and passenger side and couldn't find it anywhere. I'm getting p*ssed off searching for the connector.

Well i wish i knew, thought all cars after 1993 were supposed to be OBD-II compliant...but hey i'm not a mechanic.

Thanks for the link for imazda.com will be checking them out. And are you sure there isn't a port?? If that's the case maybe i should just pay the USD 75.00 to the mechanic and let him scan it for me.

Well i've looked at the picture and check under the dashboard if it's there and voila! nope still not appeared where it's supposed to be. :)
Will try to make a picture under dash later and post it so you guys can see.

Once again thanks to all who took their time and efforts to post a solution.

All our 323's have that same diagnostic connector in the engine bay. You can hook up an LED light there to read the codes.
I used to do this in my BG 323.
Does it have a map of the connections on the underside of the socket lid?

Hey Neil thanks for the quick response...yes under the lid there are connections as you can see from the picture below. Will search for connecting LED light to DLC...hopefully the search will give me a How To Manual....thanks again.

Here's a picture from behind the dashboard....as you can see no OBD-II connector.
Image
So were do you guys think i can look up next???
I tried looking at the ECU and saw some kind of connector sticking out, do any of you by change know what kind of connector that is???
Image
Oh yeah is it possible that there is a adapter for the connector in the engine bay to OBD-II, coz if there is maybe i can just buy one.
Once again thanks for all the help.

I don't tink you have OBD2, you'll need a shcematic of the connections in the diagnostic socket. Then, if
its the same as the BG system then you can extract the fault codes via an LED light.

Hey Neil, once again thanks a lot for all the time and effort for posting a reply. I got it now...no way to have a OBD-II...gotta check the LED light connection. Thanks again. Oh yeah gotta say that in another forum (imazda.com) an admin told me that JDM mazda build 1999 do not have OBD-II. Thanks to "protege" for posting the link.

I've just been reading the post about diagnostics connections. I have a problem with my 1999 1.8 Sport, and can't find any connection under the dash, only the 'Diagnosis' box in the engine bay. Just wondered how you check it with the LED? and is it poss to buy a diagnostic tool? Cheers fella, this is site full of top info :compress:

The BG model had all the connections in the diagnostic socket labelled. the BJ doesn't, but I can't really see it being any different.

I can't remember exactly which terminals need jumped, but you don't need an LED to read fault codes,
it'll light up the "check engine" light on the dashboard. This'll flash you the codes. All you need is the correct jumped terminals and a list of
fault codes.

Can you get a fault code reader for the BJ? It doesn't look anything like the OBD II connectors i've seen on diagnostic tools!

A basic fault code reader, like the one from GUNSON could probably be adapted for the BJ.

Where in Suriname are you from? Did a gig at the Robert Nesty Sport Hall in Paramaribo with my band once. Beautiful place, gorgeous women...

Hope you get the car sorted out...

Hi guys, found this link:

http://www.auto-diagnostic-codes.com/AB ... a-ABS.html

It appear that this kind of link is called a Data Link Connector 10 (DLC10), it tells you which pins to connect to and has a link to the codes, but it keeps saying it is busy, so i haven't got the codes yet.

Ian

Well guys, I have made my LED tester as the site above and connected it to the said positions. Switched the ignition on and the LED lights for 3 seconds as said, but then that is it, nothing happens, no fault codes.

I have disconnected the airflow meter and ran for afew minutes to see if it throws up a fault, but nothing happens
javascript:emoticon(':hmph:')
Has anybody else tried this?

Cheers

Ian

The LED lights for 3 seconds, to confirm its working.
If there is no flash codes after this then it means there are no codes stored in the fault memory.
How did you manage to run the car with no air flow meter?

I just unplugged the connector. To be honest, it didn't sound any different, but i only idled it, never reved it. Have I described it correctly, it is the connector on the unit connected the the airfilter casing, leading the the throttle?
