Oil advice and recommendations here

1997 Mazda 323f 1.5 petrol, I used 5w-30 semi last time is this ok?

I've heard thinner oils can find leaks easier on older engines would I be better with 10w-40?

If it's not leaking, stick with a 5w-30, if it starts leaking/consuming oil, go for a 5w-40 or 10w-40.

I find most members from here who buy from me use 10w/40 on 1.5.

Really it should be down to what the car needs, if it's leaking/burning a 5w-30, then yes a 10w-40 is a better option than a 5w-30, but if the car is okay with the 5w-30, stick with it.

I ran the BJ on 10W40...then changed to 5W30 as the recommendation seemed to change

It burnt it off like a rotary...so I went with 5W40, and it's been fine ever since

BUMP.

I got a 2002 Mazda 323f 2.0 sport and 87k on the clock and is due a service shortly. (BJ engine)

What sort of oil should I use, heard two cases of using 10w40 or 5w30?! Stuck in between two minds on what oil should I use. :/ help!!!

I also live in the UK, in Newcastle and it gets really cold in the winter etc. and the summers can be a hit or miss. So should I get a less viscous oil such as the 5W?

Any feedback will be appreciated.

I would use a 5w-30 oil, unless it burns a lot of oil.

The best ones there are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Mobil ESP, Castrol Edge, Shell Helix Ultra Extra, Millers XF, Fuchs GT1 and Redline, but the Motul Eco-Energy, Millers XSS and Fuchs XTR are good cheaper alternatives.

5W40 is much better in the FS engine

Yep in an FS 10w40 or 5w40 rather than 5w30

A mechanic put in 15w40 in my engine which im pretty sure is very wrong. Should I go with 5w30?

I'm looking for the best and middle of the range Oil for the Engine & Gearbox, I don't want to put the cheapest in this car but can you list that as well so I know what to get if money is too tight?

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox.

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Red Line MT90 and Millers TRX are. The Castrol Universal/Universal Plus/Syntrans Multivehicle, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives.

Mod : 0.50 piston, Cold Air intake, Engine Repaired over all, all the parts of engine.

I use Castrol 10/40 Semi.

Do i have to change?

A 10w-40 should be fine, but a 5w-40 would give better cold start protection.

I have a weird problem. I changed oil recently and put in the 3.2 liters it says in the manual. However, after checking it showed almost 1 liter to much. So i took out almost 2 liters, by accident. Weird thing is, that it still said half full with only about 1 liter in. I put another liter in, for a total of about 2 liters. And it now shows full?? I can't wrap my head around this, maybe its just the oil rod that isn't showing the correct amount?? any ideas?
