This is a guide on how YOU could build a couple of 10” subs into the annoying little corners of the BG boot. I would like to stress however that I am in no way a sounds and ICE expert, and that I only built the speakers where they are because they fit and are out of the way. Cos like most I like to fit the shopping in my boot!!!!
What I was hoping to achieve was something that looked like this
Designing the Mount
The first step is to mark out the area needed, I however did this by using a piece of cardboard and marking out the contours with a pencil. This however can take forever and you will be happy to know that after finally cutting out the cardboard and getting it to fit I then made an MDF one.
This stage is all trial and error.
I then (just for any of you guys) drew round these MDF templates onto paper so that anyone who wants a plan can PM me and I will send them out to you.
I used 12mm MDF, to save weight.
Holding the Mount in place
To hold the mount in place you will have to hold it at the top and the bottom.
The top is easy as I created a single plate that fitting directly into an existing screw hole, and to my amazement the existing screw was like 50mm long and was able to hold the mount as well. This saved me having to think up other ways of mounting the top. I also have plans for these. I used a piece of fibreglass sheet I had lying around but anything will do.
The bottom took me a little longer but I did come up with a way of doing it. I used a piece of 12mm trunking, the type you use to hide cables in houses. The MDF fits in well. The placing for this is easy. Right at the very back of the boot below the light clusters inside you will notice that there are two (one each side) pieces of plastic, like shown below. The trunking will sit behind these, this can also be seen below.
You should now have something like below.
After placing the trunking like in the picture I carefully used two self-tappers to mount them to the base of the boot. This will be ok as there isn’t much underneath, but always best to check BEFORE drilling.
The holes for the subs are to fit the 10”subs I had. I would like to stress that these only just fit, bigger subs will not fit in these mounts. Smaller one will be fine; just don’t cut the hole so big!!!
Being subs they will need some holes to allow airflow. I made holes but then covered them in the fabric. I would have thought the air would have passed thought the fabric ok. This can be seen below. I made 4 small holes about an 1” in diameter.
When it comes to covering the subs and mounting them its always best to drill the sub holes first, then cover and then use a scalpel just to cut incisions small enough to get the screw through. If you try to drill after covering you will find that the fabric will get caught round the drill bit and tear, or stretch and then it will look b*ll*cks.
I use spray mount to keep the fabric in place and then staple gunned the fabric round the corner. This will then keep it in place.
Then mount the subs.
And you should have something like this.
I then proceeded to mount the amp onto the side of these speakers ‘cases’, as I too like to be able to use the car with the back seats down, for moving large objects. This way you can do this. (Previously mounted on the back of the single fold down seat.
Best to wire this as you go.
The best bit is that they are easy to take out if for any reason you no longer want subs in the boot.
