I was looking at muy friends corsa diesel turbo yesterday... its got a little baby turbo ight afterthe manifold and form just looking at it (with my eyes) it looks like it will fit the 1.5!

A lot of people have been talking bout the fastest 1.5 and how much more fun it is to have a 1.5 whoop a 1.8 so i thought it would be a good idea to let ppl know (if they didnt already)

I havent done any measurements of any sort but if you know of a turbo corsa at the scrappy you should take a look, i want a turbo!!!!!

basically the turbo is on the manifold is just larger than your fist so wont blow the engine up andgoes back up the same side as our air filter goes

p.s. what does a breather pipe actually do?

Wont a petrol car kill a diesel turbo??

I thought because the petrol car revved higher than a diesel it would simply kill the turbo?

tractor turbos do have different characteristics and dont always fare well on petrols, but most of the time u can get away with it, though the characteristics of them aint always fantastic for the power you want out of a petrol, it all depends on personal preferacne really.

i do remember seeing a vid of a supra with a truck turbo on it, big power, bigger bang when it let go too!

There's actually a bit of space behind the manifold. If you're clever and make an angled piece you could get a larger turbo in there (you would need to make an adapter anyway to have it fit on your manifold). I wouldn't run a turbo designed for a diesel in a petrol engined car.

Aye, but it would be cheap ;)
I dont think the high revs will do any damge to the turbo, i think diesels push it faster coz of pressure of the exhaust gas (diesels are very high pressure engines)
Yer, i think you're right about the whole custom manifold thing, it would be way to easy to be a straight swap lol but perhaps in the future ill be one of the only turbod 1.5s about coz i cant find any others!

Most deisels only rev to about 4500 or 5000 rpm.
If you ask the turbo to take 6500 rpm its more than likely gonna make not nice noises.

High pressure as in high compression yes, but this doesn't affect the speed of the exhaust gasses. The exhaust is pushed out by the piston on the exhaust stroke. The faster the engine is revving, the faster the pistons are moving, so the faster they push the gas out.

However things like the volume of the gas should be taken into account. I'd personally get a turbo which is designed for a small petrol engine, and not a diesel! Saying that you could almost certainly get away with using a diesel one, just don't be surprised if it shortens the life of the turbo! ;)

lol
dont think this is quite exact enough mate ;)
plus diesel engines rev much lower so this will be a major problem wont it?

dont forget that diesel turbo's are designed for the exhaust temps that a diesel runs at!!! not enough heat is bad..too much is bad also

the metal is ment to expand at a certain rate at xxx temps etc......petrols run some what...err HOT and can causing cracking in the turbine housings.., causing wicked turbo deaths :)

best option is to get a vj20 GTX turbo (small) on a 1.5 will give enough top end for you

just get one off an RS turbo, simple fairly similar size engine rev about the same, but then again n that not a 1.5 revs to 5750rpm at best im guessing if u put a turbo on ur not gonna go up to or past 6000rpm's much and my mates 306 turbo diesal revs to 6000rpm comfitably unless hes a lier, (could be the case) he did tell me he went 115 in it the other day and there was still loads left >.<

Just an update to this thread...
I've just been to this guys house and hes got a cioen ax andthe manifold off a saxo and the turbo off a xsara and it works! apparently
hes welded the downpipe himself liek and its a bit crap but hes getting new exhaust system anyway.

better news though...he has a spare mercedes turbo! So i'm thinking of maybe seeing how is goes when he gets to puttign it on the road and firing the merc turbo on mine coz its gonna cost next to nothing (probably get the turbo free) and should get me over the 100bhp mark. Exciting thought it is i know i need to buy extra things for it which wil add up so im jus gonna see how his runs for the next few months and then maybe get it done with loads of other engine mods to make it work better :(

Believe it or not there is a 1.5 ba that has already been turbo'd!

I would upgrade the head gasket, fuel pump, injectors, clutch, etc etc etc before just slapping on a turbo - which is the easiest bit i think? 'Fabricate new headers to accommodate the turbo' but making the Z5 get along with it is another story. I'm sure your ECU will walk home  - maybe look into a Dastek to mate.

They were probably 90 PS diesels or not trying to race you!!

You would have no chance against 115PS or above.

As far as a turbo is concerned, why not source a T3 from a Mini/metro turbo. Cheap, easily overhauled and will easy push 15-18 PSI. Or a T2 from an Fiesta turbo as the spool time will be less.

Dont put a diesel turbo on a petrol as most people have said as your compressor ratios are going to be wrong. It will run out of puff by about 3.5-4K

so will these t3/t3 turbos still require alot of internal work on the engine?

I'm surprised at the fact a 1.5 ba could out run a 90ps golf. I don't reckon i'd pull away from my mums 110 passat in a hurry, the amount of torque when that turbo kicks in is nuts.

I have a run with my mates 53plate 90ps golf...I was ahead a wee bit, say no more.

Ireland I believe. I can remember reading it when I first joined on here. Its a right tool for a 1.5.

Nat - Any turbo will require work on the internals. You might get away with a low boost 4-5 PSi without working internally. But it also might go pop depending on how its driven! Boost temps, extra pressure on the crank and rods and dont forget the poor old gearbox.

Kash - Thats what I mean. A 1.5 would have no chance against a 100PS + engine. 90PS couldnt even pull the skin off a rice pudding. I had a tussle with a 130 six speed and the V6 only just sat on its bumper.

There is a 1.5 turbo in holland also, a red one I seen a few times. I dont know if a B6T manifold would fit a Z5. The US and Aus mazda forums are a really good place to research :)

well well wenever one of these threads come up i get excited and start dreaming of my Z5 with a turbo,

now come to think of it, if the smaller turbos dont damage the internals when driven in a sensible-ish mannerthen i would definitley be interested in investing....as in my area you cant really push the car much due to speed cameras/speed bumps/traffic police/POTHOLES/traffic etc...

and as for taking on a tdi golf with a z5 iv tried it got ripped apart and put my hands up in shame....maybe your mate was racing whilst the turbo was cold?? but believe me when the turbo kicks the Z5 struggles BIG TYM...

yess indeed i am but i dont have the knowledge base to do it

i think maybe summer time project? but at that it would be an extremely slow and money consuming job

money being the key factor unfortunately:(

but i think i will be purchasing few parts here and there to spread the cost :P

oh i didnt even clock it was from a silvia lol...
so im guessing that the turbo from an escort RS turbo would also be too powerful?

oh yea id imagine that too, a litre turbo car like that would need alot stronger internals and gearbox id imangine. i reckon you should speak to shaggy or someone with a turbod car. just think how much silvia and rs turbos and subys for expampel being 2 litre turbos compared to our measly horsepower. a corsa VXR which is a 1.6 turbo i think..? could be quite close on BHP before they add the turbo but once again im not that clued up on this stuff, just what i would guess!

right....

out of curiosity...

the metro GTA had a turbo engine i think? well could someone confirm that and whether the turbo from a metro GTA would be worth installing to a Z5 for a small gain?

i dont really want to mess around with the internals of the engine to have a turbo..nor do i want my car to fly, really i like the sound of the dump valves :P:P:P but i dont want the fake whistler either..

oh im soo fussy lol so neways metro GTA???
