What an excellent and well thought out tutorial

Guys is this relevant to my o3 plate 323 sport.
The part number zl-05-20-490a am I right in saying that this is the filter part of the fuel pump as shown above, and that this filter can be purchased and fitted onto the fuel pump as shown above.
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone found the base of the replacement filter to different?
I got a genuine ZL05-20-490A filter and found the base was just a round hole with no pins for strap to retain low pressure filter.
Is there another part number I should use?

How crucial are the 8 screws that hold the pump+filter in place?
Mine are damn corroded, I'm pretty sure some of them will snap while
removing them. Will it hold tightly in place if I replace, let's say, 6 of them
and just knock the heads of from the most corroded ones to get the pump out
and leave the remains of those screws in.
Impact driver might do the work for most of them, but there are few that doesn't have anything left of the Phillips pattern.

probably too late now but don't pop the heads off!!
try using a screw extractor like this:

Our little kit was from Lidl and it worked beautifully on ours screws around the fuel pump

I determined why many people have stripped the fuel pump screws... yes, rust is a big factor, but the fact that they are very tight from the factory means even with typical screwdrivers you can easily find at shops will strip the heads because Japanese cars use JIS crosshead screws! they look so similar to Phillips head screws that everyone mistakes them for that. No longer for me!

the biggest difference is that JIS screws and its drivers have very different tip angles as opposed to Phillips head or Frearson (very rare on cars) head screws

therefore, it is utmost important to use a proper JIS screwdriver to remove these screws and all other crosshead screws in Japanese cars! It's no wonder why I have stripped so many screws in the past!

Find a Japanese made screwdriver and you shouldn't go wrong

Any help would be grateful.
Just bought a 2000 Sport BJ with no history so its piece of mind.

Hi, I'd say Mazda dealer would be pretty much the only place to get one, be prepared for a fun quote though, they might even try and sell you a whole filter!

I would just take it out and clean it.

A couple of days delivery.

Checking stocks with manufacturers, these are getting quite low and rare, might be a plan for anyone doing this soon to order and keep, just in case.

I also have a BJ (1.5) and I want to change the fuel filter but I'm not sure where it's located.

Do all BJ's have in tank filters?

If you search for fuel filters for BJ's you'll find 2 different types

Examples:

or

Anyone knows for sure which one is it?
