Club323F :: View topic - what are breather filters?

The breather pipe that goes into the intake pipe is connected to the head cover (not the head itself). It is there to let oil vapour to be sucked into the engine to be burnt off before being vented to the atmosphere. It's a requirement by law, and in theory should fail an MOT if it's not connected unless plumbed to a catch tank. However, your car should run fine without it connected (put a bung in the hole in the intake pipe though). Some cars will vent a bit of oil as well, though I know mine doesn't (I have a filter instead of the pipe and it's clean).

its the little pink and silver thing just up of centre of the image. most people when they change their filter pop one on. i have moved it since, i shortened the pipe and stuck it more of less on the hole itself, but thats what it is, it simply allows the head to breathe. Arty

Hmm, thanks for the info! But what exactly is the advantage to doing that? Technically speaking.. or is it just so you don't have to hook the breather pipe up to your induction kit/replacement filter?

The reason I did was to stop the intake butterfly valve coking up - seems to have worked to some extent. Mark

You're right, it is a silly question A 'bung' is something that is inserted into a hole to in effect block, fill or 'bung' it up! Snot is technically a bung, as it bungs up your nose - but wouldn't be very effective in this case.
