Hi There, I have recently obtained a 1996 1.8. I am very pleased with it but am a bit concerned about its economy, Think I am getting less than 30mpg even on a run. maybe as low as 25mpg. I think that the thermostat is not working and wonder how much that would effect the economy and also there is a significant flat spot while accelerating through the gears. What would be the normal MPG and how much would the thermostat malfunctioning effect this? Thanks for any help

It's normal for your engine's air/fuel ratio to be rich while it's getting up to temperature.
If your thermostat is stuck open, the engine coolant will take far too long to get up to temperature, if it ever does.
This may mean that you car runs rich all the time, sucking down much more fuel than normal.

If you think the thermostat is faulty, get it replaced, or at least checked.

As for what's "normal" fuel consumption, that mostly depends on how you drive.

During the long run it is possible to achieve 42mpg when staying under 100kph/62mph.
My yearly average is 32mpg. Record low is 46mpg. Record high is 24mpg.
Mine is 1995 1.8 BP
Factory data: at 90kph - 46mpg; at 120kph - 35mpg.

My 1.8 is returning about 5.3l/100km (53mpg imperial) at present, but I really work at getting that sort of economy.

53MPG is it LPG ???

In my 1.5 Z5 Im lucky to get 40MPG, I get around 33MPG.
ie, £10 of petrol at 147.9p per ltr = 6.76 ltrs at 50 miles to the £10 = 33.62 MPG .
I get slightly more maybe 38 if on motorway and as for the V6, well lets just say around the 20 mark
So how on earth are you getting 53MPG from a 1.8 BP id like to know
I would say the 1.8 would get around 30/35 MPG but it depends on how you drive it.
Yeah check the thermostat and also your tyre pressures are correct, this can cause high consumption as can heavy items in the boot etc.

yup my rs on a good day got 6km per liter so that works out to 16mpg.

Mine shows 13.5 K/m average to One L/tr ......that's if I am reading right?

13.5 K/m = 8.39 miles

8.39 Miles X by 4.55 = 38 mpg, or have I got that wrong, as it doesn't seem right?

I put £20 in Lexi yesterday and only got 35 miles out it. Normally I get 85 miles. Mmm musta been my right foot again

That must be a really heavy right boot you have there?

Its just the buzz you get and the sound that does it for me, but all within the speed limit and with sensible driving.

I used to get 30-33mpg from my V6 without really granny driving (70mph dual carriageway driving, windy country roads to work and back).

I got maybe 35 out of my 1.8, but then I thrashed that everywhere

I just got 43mpg from my 6 diesel (2 litre) on a run... but I did have the aircon on for a lot of that, plus I was doing 70 for most of the run, and I did do 20-25 miles at the zoo at about 10mph, with the aircon on

I've noticed that to cruise at 70 the revs are around 3.500, which is OK, but the last 2Ltr I had, a Renault 25, and it always cruised at 70 doing 3.000 revs?

Mind you, I found driving my Mazda is a lot better, and quieter as well, not so much wind noise or engine noise.

Cant wait to get it out on a long run sometime, but not much chance of that really?

Hey guys, my BA is the 1.5 and gets a hilarious 23mpg(normal driving, using engine brake etc, with highways a couple of times a week 70-75mph), any ideas what could be the cause of that?

Ohh well theres something not right there unless your thrashing it everywhere you go.
Have you done a service recently, changed plugs ? Checked intake for holes(leaks). You could be running rich

Just to dredge up an old thread, what fuel economy are people getting nowadays with their 323s?

My 1.8 (on PULP) is getting approx 8.5l/100km (that's 33mpg) of occasional city/highway running. Probably a bit worse in the city and a bit better on the highway, but not by much.

35 mpgish for a BA is pretty good I'd say mate!

My last tank of fuel served me well.....all the way down to Castle Coombe at a smidgen over 70, 8 laps of the track and home again! Pretty good I thought considering its about 115 miles from our house to CC

My MX6 on cruise got 7L on the highway, the BA "feels" like 9/10L City.
Have to do a 200k round trip in the BA 1.8 to really get a better idea !

I get about 30-35mpg on a longish run in my V6, obviously less round town. I try to change gear before 3k rpm to stop the vris valve thingies opening, and don't often go over 4k else they'll both open and my fuel tank will gurgle like an emptying bath!! Pretty sure my old 1.8 auto was about the same if I remember correctly. I'm ok with that, my van gets maybe 12-13mpg on a good run (don't ask around town...), but that's what you get with a V8 auto hauling a 3.5t body My Mrs 107 does crazy mileage, 60+! Horses for courses and all that

Just completed a 300klm trip in the 1.8 BA hatchu
Happy to say it came back with 7L/100 !

The current 205/45/16's are a teensy bit undersized
so guessing 6.5L if I had the stock 185/64/14's..
That's 40mpg to 43mpg for you UK peeps
