Post subject:  Painting Brake Drums and Calipers - keep

This is a guide for the novices such as myself
i used a high Temperature Engine Enamel paint. Black for the Drums and Red for the Calipers

Gather all your tools together in preperation:

I used the following - Wire brush, masking tape, cloths, newspapers, axle stands, wheel blocks, paint brushes, paint (high temp engine paint), brake cleaner, bowl of hot soppy water

Image

With the car on a level surface, place the wheel blocks infront of the front wheels then loosen the back wheel bolts and jack the car up using the centre point at the rear then secure with axle stands. Now completely remove the wheels (for extra support i placed my old wheels underneath the car). place the newspaper under the Rear drums to catch any falling paint later on.

Wash the drums with hot soapy water and give them a good scrubbing using the wire brush to remove all excess dust, dirt and rust and then wipe dry. Now use the brake cleaner to thoroughly clean the drums, again wipe clean. do this to both Drums, the better prepared the drums are the better the results should be!!!

Image

Image

Tape off and cover with newspaper any parts you do not want to paint such as the threads and screws etc for both drums

Image

Stir the paint paint well after opening it ;)

Image

Lets get painting!!!! Apply the paint evenly to the drum using an appropiate paint brush

Image

Just as if you were doing your gcse art, keep brushing in the same direction to minimise brush stroke marks. The first coat doesn’t have to be perfect just cover all areas intended to be painted.

Image

Now leave this first drum to dry, whilst it is doing so you can make a start on the other side to utilise your time!! After the required drying time is up and the paint is dry to touch you can apply the second coat.

Image

Again Leave to dry and paint the other side then apply a third layer if required (im greedy so i did 3 coats :) )

Image

when applying the 2nd/3rd coats take care to be more precise and detailed as these are the important coats!!! use smaller brushes where needed.

it is now best to leave the paint to dry fully for about 2 hours before re-installing the wheel and moving onto the front calipers.

while you have to wait for the paint to dry why not clean your alloys or touch up other car parts with paint - i painted the "visible" part of the rear heatshield :D

When wheels are placed back on and car lowered you can now jack up the front and attempt the calipers......

As with the drums clean with hot soapy water and wire brush then clean with brake cleaner and mask off anything not to be painted - pins, nipples, pads and the like.

Image

For the calipers it is best to use a smaller, finer paint brush and take care when applying paint.

Image

As you can see above, do not worry about the first coat not being very appealing - the later coats will sort this out!! again take more care applying the 2nd and 3rd coats of paint.

Please point out any mistakes i have made so others dont make them too :thumbleft:

Just a quick note to that... If you want to use spray paint to paint the calipers/drums then its a good idea to take them off... :)

Nice guide mate...

Just a thought - are you going to regret painting the drum-wheel mating surface next time you want to remove the back wheels and find they've stuck on?

Nice guide though matey :D

Great guide. Just use copper grease on the mating surfaces, they will stop the wheels sticking just in case.

Looks good there mate, but i think it would look better if you painted the rear ones red aswell.

Painted my drums Blue last weekend, then quickly painted them black. The colour seemed to make them look inadequate. The black hides them. :happy3:

yeah i was going to paint them red but after some advice and looking at photos i was persuaded to the black :D

Good job fella  . Just use hammerite if you can find it in the colour you need. Ive been using it on me cars for 8 years now and has never let me down. Half the price aswell, The new flake effect stuff looks pretty nice!
Where did you get your discs from and how much?

cheers - i was going to use hammerite but found the engine paint to be cheaper :D

i got my black diamonds from a local shop for local people (hehehe ;) ) but there are a few places others have bougth theres from, cant remember how much off the top of my head im afraid - try searching "black diamond" see what comes up i know prices have been mentioned before, hope it helps

I was always a bit worried about using Hammerite due to the potentially high temperatures, but the folks over at www.celica-club.co.uk swear it's OK.

Personally, I just paint my calipers with Halfrauds "brake caliper" paint, which works very nicely and is relatively thick, so tends to fill in ex-rust pock-marks and the like. Ten minutes between coats, with the car driveable a couple of hours later.

how many coats would you recommennd?

Author:  Dai [ Tue Sep 20, 2005 3:46 pm ]
Post subject:

i did 3 coats. not sure if there would be problems if you did "too many" coats. after the second coat thought you should have a decent finish so its up to you really.
