Post subject:  Headlights too low - help!

Does anyone know how to alter the angle of the headlights - actually within the light fitting itself. My lights are way too low to the point where it's dangerous to drive at night because I can't see the road. The control inside the car for altering the headlights is on maximum but the lights are still pointing too low. Help?

firstly, make sure your bulbs are correctly fitted into the lamps - if they are slightly out, the beam will be way off.

Then look for the screw adjuster on the headlight itself - a big philips I think, and turn it - you'll see the light coming up as you turn (or down, if you're turning the wrong way)

Correct - first thing is to make sure the bulb is fitted correctly and that it is the correct bulb (a H1 bulb will "fit" into a H3 socket, but it won't be straight), then switch the lights on. Do this in the evening so you can see the lights on the road. There's a screw right at the wing side of the headlamp, sticking up about 2 inches from the light itself. Turn that with a screwdriver (philips). If the light raises, good. If it lowers (or wont turn), turn it the other way :thumbleft:

Personally I would take it to any good MOT test station and ask them to check it for you, Most will oblige and probably charge you £5 for it :dontknow:

The only downside of doing it yourself is you never know when it's too high for oncoming motorists, Something which is a pet hate of mine

Like _stuz_ said. First check the bulbs are seated correctly then go to a MOT station and have them adjusted properly. Mine needed adjusting for the MOT and it made a world of difference. I drove the car for nearly a year thinking the headlights were crap. I fiddled around with the adjusters trying to improve things but couldn't. When they were adjusted properly they were brilliant and I can now drive down unlit B roads without using main beam they're that good. Well worth spending the few quid.
