Not quite a guide, more a - How to.............

Okay – Heated mirrors, Mazda has them as standard on some V6’s I think  and on Type R’s too. Thing is – the wiring is already on lower models – Like my 1996 1.5

All you need is a pair of heated mirror glass and a 30amp relay, I have grafted on a set of MK-4 Golf mirrors with blue tinted glass but some off a BA V6 would be simpler, and a normal 4 pin 30amp relay. You could get a genuine one from Mazda £21+ or one from a scrappy (pocket sized item ) I used a normal relay, snipped the Mazda relay plug off and crimped 4 female spade connectors onto the wires.

So, both front door cards off, and feed the 2 wires from the glass through the mirror housing and into the door.

Trace the existing mirror wires to the white block connector and you will find 2 extra wires on the other side of it not connected to anything. Snip these 2 and connect the heating element’s + to the white/green wire, and the – to the black wire. Door cards back on.

DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THE NEXT BIT……

Now to find the illusive relay connector. Unlike the G-Spot, the relay connector can actually be found, and its located on the left hand side of the passenger footwell.

Here goes - remove the small trim cover on the bottom left, the glove box, the left hand dash end plate and the glove box surround – all this for just 1 x trim clip and 5 x screws. Now remove the passenger airbag  (don’t worry your not going to disconnect it) this is done by removing 4 x 12mm bolts from underneath, the wiring is pretty damn long so it can be withdrawn but still connected. Now the Heater blower assembly  it’s the massive white plastic lump on the left under the footwell, there are 2 x 10mm nuts at the bottom and one x 10mm nut on the left - visible by the now removed air bag.

Now – on the left hand side of the footwell you should see 2 metal brackets holding relays etc, undo the 10mm bolt holding the top one on. When its free turn it over and there is a empty relay connector in the centre

Now either connect your Mazda relay or snip the plug off and attach 4 x female spade crimps to each wire. If you chose the latter then attach the 4 wires to a 30amp relay as follows:

Image

Ensure you have a 10amp fuse in slot F20 (drivers footwell), turn ignition key twice and press the Heated Rear Window switch, you’ll hear the new relay click as it should do, now your mirrors will get warm/hot

Now replace all the clag you have removed - in reverse order, making sure you don’t have any spare nuts/bolts or screws left at the end

Cheers Stu, been thinking about doing this for a while but just havent got round to it  I've even had a pair of V6 heated mirror glasses sat in my collection of parts for almost a year! But the need to go through with it has become more important now that the winter is kicking in so hoping I can find time to do it...

There should be a small (20cm) length of wiring comes with the glass so its just the heated version of the glass and a relay

It was the entire mirror assembly grafted onto an F bracket - it took an entire week to do, cutting, filling, smoothing, more filling, smoothing, painting etc – but - it looks tops. And they still fold inwards too

does your a/c work (is it gassed)??
if so i'm not sure how easy it would be for you as the easiest option with a/c is to drop out the a/c units under the dash :?

oh man i found a major shortcut on this, well if u have a/c !!

all u need to do is remove the glove box and surround and the cover over the central locking relay.
u can then slightly pull the thick yellow insulation and the empty relay slot will appear! pretty hard to slot it in with the amount of slack available, but fortunatly i was able to!

ry4n's pic showing the yellow insulation Image

Can anyone please let me know the wiring diagram for heated mirror pre-ford. I got a pair of heated mirror and relay. I plan to take signal from rear heated window switch, is this correct?
