Post subject:  How to access reverse light?

I need to access the wiring to the reverse light as I am getting a double din unit for my lantis aswell as a reversing camera, so I need to access the wiring of the reverse light to make the camera work and such. How do I get the plastic panels off and is it easy to identify the wiring?

Access is easy: open the tailgate, and look underneath (where you hold it, to lift it up). There are two small, square plastic panels you pull off, one for the reverse light, one for the brake light.

There, you access the back of the light, change the bulb etc. You can see the wiring.

If you need to access a larger part of the wiring:

1) Remove the tailgate handle (the cup-shaped piece of plastic inside, held on with two crosshead screws)
2) Take off all the trim panels on the tailgate, in sequence:

- flat, rectangular panel at the top of the tailgate
- side panels (first remove the parcel shelf; then the two oval "hooks" the parcel shelf strings hang on, twist them sideways and the "hooks" will come out; then you can take off the side panels)
- lower panel

They're all held on with spring clips. Use a trim remover or something flat (big flat-head screwdriver will do), apply pressure, and pop the panels off. You will need to apply a lot of pressure, and when they separate they will make a loud noise - that's ok. The panels may bend a bit, but they're soft plastic so they shouldn't break. Don't get too close with your face/eyes, as the clips are metal, and occasionally they will fly off somewhere.

But, be careful with the side panels, as on the undersides there are moulded fingers of plastic that might break if you're not careful.

Reassembly: the reverse, the panels snap back on. You will need to thump them hard with your fist, to re-attach the two halves of the clips.

I think there are photos of this process somewhere on Sundance's maintenance thread, if you want to dig through that.

if its just to switch camera on put the cable through the firewall and join onto the reverse switch on the gearbox. make sure its the reverse switch and not the neutral switch.

Thanks for the in depth info serena. Really helpful, will post when it's all done.

That sounds like more work brucey lol but the power cable for the camera is rather short in comparison to the video output cable as the wiring is designed in a way to splice into the reverse light power. Appreciate your suggestion though :D
