as usual apologies if its been said before but search didn't turn up anything quite the same...

I have a strange noise coming from my car...

Basically i noticed a slight grinding/swooshing noise when turning sharply while powering on at 3-4000 rpm. pretty specific so i didn't hear it that often. seemed to be linked to gearbox so i did a gear box oil change - no change, old oil wasn't too dirty.

anyway recently its been getting worse and i've realised it makes the noise when i push the gearstick left or right while in gear and under power. (turning sharply must have been pulling the stick over slightly before)

It sounds like something is dry. similar to the sound it makes clearing rust off the brake disks. pretty sure i put the full amount of oil in and don't think its all leaked out.

When in gear and the car is moving this will be the vibration and noise from the gearbox transfering up the gear stick and making itself known as pressure is being put on the stick and its not in its natural position

so could it just be as simple as a loose bush allowing more free movement of the stick? never used to make this noise or at least not as easily... cheers

still think there could be more to this...

my usual driving position is with one hand on the stick. i cant do this any more as there is inevitably some sideways pressure.
Could it be a bearing somewhere? I've heard talk of thrust bearings going, has anyone had experience with these?

The thrust bearing is inside the gearbox so unlikely to be the culprit ?
