Strange one, having issues with putting on full lock either way. I can get 9/10ths of the way no bother, but once im on full lock i get a squeeling noise. Easy answer, dont put on full lock, but any ideas what may be causing it?? Im thinking possibly an air lock in the power steering system

Hi mate, the good book don't mention out about squealing. Perhaps mounting bushes on the rack?

I'd have a look for leaks in the system an check the P.S pump gasket area for leaks too...

To get air out the system mate, run her up at fast idle move the wheels side to side without hitting full lock, this should work any air out, keep checking flued level as you go mate.

Run her up for about 10 mins or take her out for a road test.

Assuming the noise comes when the car is stationary with engine running and the steering wheel is turned and held on full lock:

I think squeal on full lock is a reasonably common issue with older cars' power steering, at least here in Oz. Cause can be as simple as a loose or worn power steering pump drive belt so check the belt tension and condition first. The belt slips under the load at full lock, causing the screeching/squealing noise.

Cheers guys, thanks for the info, i think ill start at the belt tension then go ftom there. Finding any sort of leak will be a problem at the moment as the leaky rocker cover has covered the whole engine in oil over time so hopefully a deep clean and belt check will do the trick.
Failing that a system overhaul can be done, thankfully i have a donor car so parts should be ok.

Is it like a full-on loose belt-type squeal, or more like creaking/squeaking?

If the latter, perhaps it's bushes, as I get a little of that on Butch on full lock when stationary, I suspect because he hasn't been moved for a while. It sounds more like rubber on metal.

If the former, I'm dubious about it being an airlock in the PAS: throughout all my neverending work on Butch's PAS, I've tested it lock to lock several times with an only partially filled system, without any noise at all, let alone full-on squealing.

I have had the occasional belt squeal, which seems to be down to a constantly loosening alternator belt - I think the tensioner is dying.

As Patrick suggests, I would first check the belt tensions or the belts themselves.

At least the PAS system on the 1.5 is largely accessible. On the V6 it's a wheel-off-and-lie-on-the-floor job!
