I bought this car earlier this year, as a track/weekend car.
It's an 06/91 Mazda 323 Astina SP, in Mighty Grey. Think it's equivalent to the GT overseas - Power windows, sunroof, BP-ZE DOHC. Except mine has been converted to the BP-ME SOHC, as the old engine must've blown at some point over the 446,000km the car's done.
Still feels like the original gearbox, but the suspension is surprisingly solid for the age. Apart from some surface rust it's solid as a rock mechanically.
Paint's pretty awful, and it's been in a collision on the drivers side, as it has a repainted door and the sill is a bit dented. Sunroof needs a helping hand sometimes, power window switch is for drivers on the other side of the road, and the drivers side door trim has a bunch of wear from where someone's elbow has rested for many years.
Had to get a new windscreen as the original was cracked, and I got a new seatbelt as the original one was fraying. I'd like to avoid getting it defected, as it'd cost more to make it registerable again than its worth.
That's what you get when you pay next to nothing for the car though.
I've got a replacement black bonnet and grey drivers side fender to fit, and I've got a somewhat complete BP-ZE engine that I'm planning on putting in.

Haven't made much progress in terms of actually doing much with the car, but I've bought a whole lot of parts.
  • New fuel pump the other day because the other one died.
  • Petrol now leaks out of the fuel pump / tank level sender connector on top of the tank. Siphoned a couple litres to stop it leaking, and I'm planning on silicone-ing it tomorrow. Was worried it was the tank leaking right as I filled it up, because the car actually came with a spare tank for some reason. That might remain a mystery forever.
  • Bought a whole bunch of parts on sale; TRW pads and rotors all around, Whiteline camber bolts front and SuperPro camber bolts rear, oil filter, fuel filter, SuperPro rear trailing arm bushes, Whiteline rear strut tower brace, coolant and brake fluid.
  • Also bought Kia KKY0146062 gear linkage bushings, the matching bolt and nut, BP-ZE distributor and BP-ZE ECU.
  • A mate gave me a set of 15" Enkei wheels with semi-slicks. My understanding is I can keep the wheels, and use the tyres until the next race season.
  • Still have the grey RHF fender and black hood. Bought some black Plasti-Dip for the plastic trim pieces (maybe), and the side mirrors, as I think the black matching the hood will be much better than the extremely faded paint.
Haven't done anything about the BP-ZE swap yet, except the harness in my car is the DOHC one, not the SOHC one (as it has the VICS connector) which saves me trying to solder together the chopped up harness I got with my engine.
Hopefully over the Christmas break I can actually make some progress with the swap, as soon as I move all the rubbish out of the garage haha.
Not sure how I'm going to store both engines out of the car when I'm doing the swap. If anyone in Aus wants a ~150,000km good condition B8-ME / BP-ME SOHC, at some point in the indeterminate future, hit me up. I'm in SA.
