Legs doing fine chap thanks, bit stiff but I'm mobile again

I might have a bit of a problem with the engine swap as it goes, I was checking the emmisions control stuff on the EPC this morning, just had a niggling doubt and it transpires the intake I got from Matt is completely different from the intake on M1tch's car, basically, a pre/post Ford problem

Looks like there are two extra three way valves on the pre Ford, and all the EGR pipes on my intake manifold have been cut

Just block off all the EGR stuff

Yeah block it all off Andy we blocked off the egr pipes on Vulcan when we fitted the stainless headers and she runs fine no problems what so ever

The engine might actually be better without anyways as its a pre '91 engine

Just about to take the first load of bits over to Mum and Dads ready for next weekend, exhaust stuff mostly but I'm going to take the emmissions loom over as well so I can check to see if the dizzy connector is right, if not I'll have to find a pre Ford dizzy PDQ!

I also need to check whether M1tch registered the BG engine when he fitted it, I've never thought to check until Nathan mentioned the run around they had getting the DVLA to give them docs because they didn't know what car their GTR cam from!!!!

Evening upodate:-

The dizzy, coolant temp sensor and the lambda are all different on the crossover/post 1.8, luckily, the dizzy, coolant temp sensor, heat sensor and oil pressure sensor can all be used from Meanie

I might be able to use the lambda sensor from Meanie as it might be a universal fit one, its got 4 wires and I've only wired up three to match the block connector, so it stands to reason

As Lerch and Hughie have suggested, I shall more than likely delete the EGR system, its a pre 1991 engine so doesn't need a cat for an MOT emmisions test. My only concern is without the missing three way valves.......

On checking the EPC, it turns out the 1.5 has the same 3 way valves WooHOO I'll just need a bracket making to mount them to the inlet manifold

does fitting an older engine then mean you dont need a cat?

I don't think it does actually! I think its the age of the VIN, but I could be wrong!!

I spoke to Nathan about this the other day, he said it's the age of the engine not the chassis, so I won't need a CAT in theory even though I'm fitting one anyway

Just looked it up, we're both wrong but you're more right

It's whichever is oldest So if you put a BA engine into a pre-cat BG, it would need a cat but you're putting a pre-cat engine into a BA, so you don't need one

Quick update as well....

The intake manifold has been stripped cleaned and painted, just a coat of clear lacquer now before I start reassembling tomorrow night, pics to follow.

Sundries have been order, difficult seals, injector seal, new fuel filter etc.

Last night Nathan and I started disconnecting the engine in the donor car, the only things we'll be using are the engine, exhaust and some of the vacuum piping, all that's left to do is remove the drive shafts and exhaust from the CAT unbolt the mounts and lift it out

G series shafts are ready to be greased and reassembled and tonight I'll have a go at cleaning the box up a bit and maybe Hammerite the mounts.

I also need to clean the loom.

We'll be starting to strip Meanie tomorrow night ready to get properly stuck in Saturday morning

Oh, and we hand cranked the engine as well, turned sweet and smooth

OK, so, finished work at half four, Meanie packed and ready to go by six! My cave looks no emptier :-P

At 7.30pm and with 286,575 miles on the clock, Meanie was switched off for the last time (for now) as a 1.5 and work commenced, Nathan and I spent 2 hours on her tonight, Plus Gassed everything, drained engine and gearbox oil, loosened drive shaft mount, intake and airbox off, diff off, wheels off, emission loom disconnected engine side, power steering pump off plus some other stuff I can't remember right now :-P

We reconvene at 7 tomorrow morning, hope the weather holds :O

Yup, can't argue that, we did a 3_2_1 countdown and a last rev and switched off, many many miles of fun on that engine, as I said though, for now the supercharged 1.5 may yet live

Nathan said I should have counted 3_2_3,that would have been cool, and, we didn't film it, that was a mistake :-/

However, the GT looks great in her, fills the bay nicely, there are pics but mobile faffiness stalls me till I get on the PC :-P

I must take a moment to thank profusely, Lee and Nathan for their support and drive in getting Meanie back on the road ASAP, as usual they have both gone above and beyond in their efforts

So far, the engine is in complete with refurbished manifold, engine bay wiring done extremely neatly, interior wiring done but needs tidying up before refitting the centre console, intake needs work, the Stephen's intake is a bit brash for me, I'm desperately looking for a standard pre Ford intake pipe and airbox if anyone has any ideas

The exhaust is an issue, we've got most of it hooked up, including my existing back box, thanks to some deft filing unfortunately the spring bolts are too short from the down pipe to the cat, trip to the exhaust people is needed!

We had to retro fit the alternator which required some pully nodding, and a new V belt, making a complete set of Gates belts all round.

The main issue is the drive train, we were going to run G series box and shafts BUT I don't have the right flywheel, so we're having to run F series, however, we intended to fit the parts from the 1.8 BA but sheared one of the slave cylinder bolts, so we switched to Meanie ''s existing box only to find 1.5 drivers side shafts don't fit a 1.8 :O

So we decided to fit the F series shaft from the donor, only it's welded to the hub (bad memories for all three of us with guys problem), solution fit all of it to Meanie as a temporary fix!

Despite the heroic effort to get her moving for Sunday evening though, we had to admit defeat, we lost half a day Saturday to rain and it was the same from about 6 on Sunday If we hadn't had to faff with the gearbox options so much we'd have made it, but, we stuck at it till 10 last night before suspending play

We were very cold and very tired but we got a lot done

Thanks must also be given to my compatriots for the lift home, all the way to Dudley

I will properly document the event with pics when I get the chance but for the moment, we desperately need an F series drivers side driveshaft assembly, if we could obtain a G series flywheel, the G series transmission is back on plus a standard 1.8 airbox and intake pipe would be nice

Forgot to mention the PS pump, the fricking adjuster is rusted solid, so until thats freed off, we can't get the belt on, what I shall try and do this evening is remove the adjuster, clean the rust off, paint it, then grease it liberally when I stick it back on

Tonights other job, finish tidying up the interior wiring

Update from last night....

Did a couple of hours last night on me tod, turns out the exhaust bolts will fit, the problem is the flanges on the CAT and the centre pipe are slightly misaligned, if we take the CAT out and refit it downpipe end first it should all bolt up nicely, its a two man job though so it'll have to wait till tomorrow night

Made a start on the PS pump adjuster as well, managed to get the adjuster lock nut freed up with deft use of Plus Gas, a 14mm ring spanner, a lump hammer and much wriggling about However, the pivot nuts for the adjuster plate and the pump pivot are another matter, the plate nut is just about accessible from underneath the car in the same fashion as the lock nut, but, with less room to swing the hammer I realised I was in danger of rounding the nut and so prudently backed off. The pump pivot nut was I am sure, designed as a joke!!!!!! :/ its accessible through a slot in the pulley, but with only about 30-40mm clearance between the frame rail and the pulley, there is no WAY of getting a socket in there, even my Vortex drive sockets will fit, looks like we'll have to whip the pump off again and one of us will have to hold it while the other tries to undo the nuts, NUTS!!!!!!!

I'm off outside to spray them with Plus Gas..... again

We have a good hub, we have a brand new CV joint, we have the right drive shaft with a rusty old CV that won't budge probably because it's been sat on my drive for 7 years, can it really be that simple?

Simply knock the hole hub off the end of the shaft, fit the new CV, bang the good hub back on and Bob's your Uncle

Let's just hope the internal spline counts the same eh :-P

P.S. We'd have thought of this on Sunday, but being cold, wet and tired probably didn't do us any favours

Hi Andy just reading your thread then i came to thinking have still got any stuff from your 1.5 engine like induction kit, exhaust rather than me buying from fpstore and waiting ages for it to arrive,just a thought as i know i said i want to swap to a 1,8 but that's a long way ahead and i just need a bit more grunt through the gears so if you have anything lying around that i can use on my Faithful i would be very happy to buy it from you. cheers Andy and may all my f--- ing dreams come true
