Clear Indicators
Why?
Tools and bits
Flat blade screwdrivers various sizes.
Phillips screwdriver.
Boiling water.
Hot air Gun or hair dryer.
Craft knife.
Pair of Ultra Silvatec Indicator Bulbs.
Patients.
How-to guide.
1 Undo the relevant Phillips fixing screw on each lamp.
2 This allows each lamp to pull forward, but will be restricted by the lamp wires.
3 Disconnect the indicator and side light bulb fittings by turning them roughly a quarter turn, and then pull each fitting away from the lamp. This will release each housing from the car.
4 Having removed the light housings from the car, boil the kettle.
5 After having a cup of coffee and a fag, and then boil the kettle again.
6 Poor boiling water into a suitably sized bowl to allow each lamp to be submersed into the water. (I used the around half bowl of the kitchen sink). Boil the water again to allow the water to be topped up if required.
7 Fully submerse one lamp in the boiling water for several minutes; this will warm up the glue, which fixes the clear lense to the lamp housing.
8 Using a couple of flat screwdrivers (including a wide blade version), very carefully prise the clear lense away from the lamp housing, being aware of the location lugs. Please note that the clear lense around the fixing screw is very easy to crack be very careful in this area. The hotter you keep the glue the better so keep dunking the fitting in the water and top it up with more boiling water if required. Continue to separate the components whilst cutting the glue with a knife. DO NOT RUSH.
9 Once you have the fitting apart the orange lense is simply held in place by two Phillips screws. Unscrew these, remove the orange plastic, and then refit the screws to keep the reflector in place.
The bit that you remove looks like this:
10 Continue to immerse the clear lense in the boiling water, and clean as much remaining glue from the lense lip as possible. A combination of your thumbnail and knife is best for this.
11 Clean and dry all items thoroughly before proceeding to item 12.
12 Mount the grey section of one housing in a vice. Now carefully heat the glue in the channel of the housing with your hot air gun (or hair dryer). The glue doesn´t need too much heat at this stage and be careful not to melt or burn the plastic housing.
13 Carefully line up the relevant clear lense with its housing and simply push the two components back together until all lugs and locators are together.
14 Repeat steps 7 to 13 for the other lamp.
15 Insert a 21w Silvatec Indicator Bulb to each of the indicator bulb holders these shine orange when lit but look silver when not, giving a clear look to your indicator. (You can buy a pair of these for £14.90 at:
RagingSpeed - Make sure you get the opposite bulb type)
15 Take the lamps back to the front of the car and refit each lamp fitting into the rear of the housing.
16 Fix the lamp into place using the original screws.
17 Boil the kettle again for another coffee and admire your new indicators:
Please I´ve also swapped the wiring to enable the original indicator to become a driving light, and the original side light to become the indicator as below as well as inserting leds for the alarm and side light!
